ABOUT

Happy Birthday, Play Club! We turn TWO!

"Mockingbirds just make music; they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out. That's why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird."

ABOUT THE PLAY:

Set in the Deep South, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sees racial injustice envelop a small-town community. Through courage and compassion, lawyer Atticus Finch seeks the truth, and his feisty daughter, Scout – a young girl on the cusp of adulthood – brings new hope to a neighbourhood in turmoil. This new adaptation by Christopher Sergel has become one of the most produced plays in the US, recently with a sell-out run at Regent's Open Air Theatre in London, now currently touring the UK.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is Play Club? Play Club is a pop-up theatrical initiative, bridging together all corners of the theatre and film industries and communities to chew on some of the world’s best playwrights. The first half is an informal reading, the second an open forum. Play Club began November 2012 at Alexander Bar and has grown to become one of South Africa’s longest continuous running theatrical book clubs. In short, it’s where scripts go to unwind. Come play!

Does everyone have to read? No! Everyone should have a copy of the script, as the focus of Play Club is the text.

I hate readings. So do we! But Play Club makes it fun and engaging. Plus the wine helps!

So it's a book club? In a sense. In a production, the most exciting part is the first read-through with the cast. This, in a sense, is a mutual project that brings together top actors and friends to a magical, one afternoon-only table read of a world class script. The cast is not rehearsed, but with it comes the true excitement of the first time. And Drew at the healm makes sure it keeps moving forward.

I'm an actor, but my cold-reading isn't so great. Play Club is a chance as an actor to flex your muscles - and becomes an actor's playground! Play Club, afterall, is play.

Who's done it before? Our Play Club alum has starred on stages around the world, is currently starring in a hit show taking South Africa by storm, appear daily in commercials, nightly in films you watch and are also exciting up-and-coming student actors, all brought together by a simple love of theatre and a pursuit of community.

Is this a full production? No! But it's not your class' boring reading of MACBETH either! Close your eyes and the play comes to life on the biggest stage in the world: your imagination!

I don't know anyone yet. Don't worry. The Play Club family is one of the most welcoming groups of people you'll meet. They were all where you were once too.

How many have you done? This is our twenty-somethingth reading. And it's almost a different mix of people for every single one!

How big is it? That's quite a personal question. We assume it's in regard to the group. We have traditionally set it at 13 (and grew to a group of 60) and have set it back at 13. With the new venue of Studio G14, we're setting a loose limit to 13.

Will I have to talk? Yes. But only twice: once introducing yourself at the beginning and once at the end with your thoughts and first impressions on the play! Anything more than that is up to you. Love it? Hate it? Just be ready to back it up!

Is this fun? We wouldn't keep doing it otherwise. It's the best of seeing a show and getting a great passionate  and engaging conversation about it afterwards.
