ISPILI Magazine Activation: Drawing Room Café
Tue Mar 26, 19:00 - Tue Mar 26, 21:00
The Drawing Room Café
ABOUT
The first issue of ISPILI Magazine carries an ancient energy that meditates on what and how we can understand the present by exploring the idea, feeling, and concept of SPACE: it interrogates what memory is and how it is packaged in colonial settler cities, thereby re/producing particular modes of being + temporalities; it charts the visual landscape of graffiti as a tool to transform and create new worlds, as well as the creative force and teachings that inkenkqe opens/ ruptures.
We ask, in light of our technologized bodies/ Selves, where and what is our space, and how far cant the photographic image or the sonic vibrations of cymbals negubu/ isghubhu teleport us; what are dreams and the messages they bring us from the astral/ ancestral plane, emathongweni; whatd does it mean to become – ukuthwasa, and its relationship and history with music and healing.
Since the publication and activation of the first volume of ISPILI Magazine in Rhodes University in eRhini, The Interim eKapa and the Mandela Centenary Book and Film festival at Nelson
Mandela University eBhayi, ISPILI Magazine has been received with much critical acclaim and the second volume is highly anticipated.
For the intended activation of ISPILI Magazine Volume 1: SPACE at the Drawing Room Café, we aim to curate a space that promotes healing through ritual: interaction, collaboration and participation. This will be achieved through exhibitions, live performances, screenings and dialogues.
Sonic Vibrations will be transmitted by:
IZANUSI in collaboration with
Thandeka Mfinyongo
Sky Dladla
Ernie Koela (Umntana weXhwele)
ISPILI Magazine will be on sale for R150 a copy.
