Let's talk about Artificial Intelligence
Humanity stands at the dawn of a new age in which we are going to build superhuman machines but we haven't yet grappled with the problems associated with creating something that may treat us with the same indifference with which we treat ants.
For all its benefits, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to replace human decision-making will inevitably create new risks whose consequences are at best unforeseeable, terrifying yet undeniably seductive.
No doubt history will be written. Will it be written by us, or by the machines?
Join us on the evening as we explore varied perspectives on this compelling topic. We’ll be screening a selected commercial pertaining to AI, talks by expert speakers, and the main feature film: Metropolis.
Released to the German public in January of 1927, Metropolis was one of the first science fiction movies in the history of film. The story focuses on the differences between the working class who power the city and the wealthy who indulge in it; a narrative current at the time as the imperial powers of greater Europe were dissolved and turned into industrial juggernauts squaring up for world domination.
Notably, the film introduces the iconic and devious femme fatale ‘Maria robot’ created by the evil scientist Dr Rotwang who, in his crazed pursuit of making a perfect being, creates something so magnificent that no one can tell it from a mortal. Blinded by the splendour of his creation, Dr Rotwang doesn’t question his master’s instruction to infiltrate the workers’ revolt with his robot disguised as their sage. Rotwang’s failure of intuition leads to catastrophic consequences that affect not only the workers but the entire population of Metropolis.
