ABOUT

The Hot Club of Cape Town brings to you.......

Crazy Rhythm: the story of Gypsy Jazz. A two-hour show (including interval) that tracks the story of Gypsy Jazz from its origins to the present day. Informative and entertaining, it takes the audience from the first meeting of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt in 1934 Paris to the original Gypsy Jazz being played by the Hot Club of Cape Town right here and now!

Crazy Rhythm: the story of Gypsy Jazz explores the influences that informed the music of Stéphane and Django, from New Orleans jazz to modern classical composers, and sees how the music further changed after Django’s untimely death at the age of 43—and how it continues to evolve.

Gypsy Jazz has become a global phenomenon in recent years. Over two hours of music and conversation, Crazy Rhythm: the story of Gypsy Jazz explains how and why!

The Hot Club sound emerged from Europe in the 1930s, combining Swing Jazz with the rippling melodies of Parisian dance-halls, and the distinctive Gypsy harmonies of the Eastern Mediterranean. It is now usually known as Gypsy Jazz or Jazz Manouche.

The Hot Club of Cape Town is the Cape’s premier Gypsy Jazz group, playing hot, swinging music that appeals to people across the board. Formed in 2016 by three experienced musicians, the group has now played over 250 shows, both private and public. The mesmerising pulse of the rhythm gets people of all ages dancing wherever the group plays, daytime or evening, indoors or out. From jazz standards of the 1920s and 30s, through the masterpieces of the Gypsy Jazz canon, to original compositions that continue the tradition into the present day, the Hot Club of Cape Town can make any space swing!
