They’ve been praised for their work ethic, innovative sound and authenticity, but at the heart of what they do; Stone Jets have a deep desire to create good music that resonates with fans from all walks of life.

Formed in Cape Town, South Africa, Stone Jets create toe-tapping music, wrapped in soul and traditional elements. While their sound is most commonly referred to as Afro-pop, their multi-layered approach to song writing makes them difficult to pigeonhole.

That’s partly because this multi-cultural band draws on a host of influences: from African and classical music, to blues, folk and classic rock.

As Zkhipani.com journalist Mandisa Ntsinde writes: “It is rare to meet a band that is not only fresh but has massive potential to actually impact the industry; this is not based on their following but it is based purely on their talent and mass appeal. Stone Jets are such a group, don’t sleep on them!

The band is the result of a musical partnership that worked so well, bassist and vocalist Given Nkanyane and guitarist Manfred Klose decided to make it permanent. The two met when Given was working on a solo project. A few months later he relocated from Johannesburg to Cape Town and Stone Jets was born.

Five years on, the duo has become a trio with the addition of drummer Eduan Joubert. They’ve quit their day jobs and spend all their time honing their craft and sharing their original sound with music lovers across the length and breadth of South Africa.

Given and Manfred released their first EP River in 2014. The band’s second release, What I Say (released in 2016), was preceded with a lyric video for the first single off the EP, “Hurricane”, which critics have described as a “lively, foot-tapping summer single”. The EP would be the band’s CV, setting them up for a whirlwind of publicity and radio play.

Since then, their singles have been playlisted on commercial, community, campus and in-store stations in almost all of South Africa’s nine provinces. They’ve also been featured on national television programs including ETV’s CrazE and Sunrise, SABC 2’s Hectic Nine 9 and SABC 3’s Expresso Show.

Festivals are a big part of South African music culture and Stone Jets can add playing all of the country’s major festivals — including OppikoppiSplashy Fen  and Up the Creek — to their list of achievements.

These performances, along with the band’s relentless touring schedule have helped the trio fine-tune their live shows. It’s given them a chance to experiment with their delivery and easily convert their package for any size stage. Stone Jets’ first official music video for the single “I can’t live without you” (released in December 2017) aimed to give music lovers a taste of their stage presence.
