ABOUT

An intimate double bill performance of two of South Africa's most compelling folk/alternative acts:

About Laurie Levine:

SAMA nominated singer songwriter is best known for her fresh blend of Americana and folk music. The release of her latest solo record, ‘Canyons’, bought with it a whole new sound and outlook. She moved away from the acoustic terrain of country and folk into a lush world of electric guitars, beats, synths and spacious reverbs. Dark at times, introspective and pierced with a sublime beauty, the songs reverberate and shimmer with otherworldly elegance and intelligence. While some songs are intoxicating with ominous lyrics and black staccato beats, others glow with optimism and a rich lyricism that is bought home by the intimacy of Levine’s vocal delivery. Laurie Levine is continually exploring new sounds to expand her sonic palette and will be showcasing some new songs for the first time.

About the Great Yawn:

The Great Yawn is an alt-country project from Pretoria, created with the aim of exploring simplicity and beauty through song-writing and live performance. In their debut album release ‘Botanica’, Danielle Bakkes (vocals) employs emotional lyrical themes filtered through a nostalgic lens of personal experiences. Her style of story-telling is often non-linear, and could be described as a montage of memories: relationships, familiar places, and sometimes even her favourite food or drink find their way into her prose.
