ABOUT

The second of our SHORT FILM SESSIONS brings a environmental and conservation theme to the fore with 5 films highlighting an array topics from human-wildlife conflict, to a Vietnam war veteran's love for the grizzly bears of Yellowstone National Park and to one woman's mission to declare the Tarkine region of Tasmania a world heritage site. Doors open at 6:00pm, films start at 8:00pm

GRIZZLY COUNTRY

After serving in the Vietnam War, author and eco-warrior Doug Peacock spent years alone in the Wyoming and Montana wilderness observing grizzly bears.

This time in the wild changed the course of his life. With the protection of Yellowstone grizzlies now under threat, Peacock reflects on the importance of habitat and why he continues to fight for wild causes. Directed by Ben Moon

LIVING ON THE EDGE

Black Bean Productions has set out to document and uncover the untold story of human wildlife conflict in Africa. This issue is becoming a serious threat to wildlife and conservation areas due to the increasing population and pressures on wilderness areas.

It also affects the livelihood of many people on a daily basis. It is an issue without a simple answer. This documentary is a version Black Bean Productions completed for Tanzanian television and is part of the Edge of Existence project, but is not the Edge of Existence documentary. This feature film will be screened once we have sign off from all stakeholders – but this short documentary (Living on the Edge) gives one an idea of how big this issue is, and the complexity of it. An issue that is faced by many around the world."

TAKAYNA

takayna / Tarkine in northwestern Tasmania is home to one of the last tracts of old-growth rainforest in the world, yet it’s currently at the mercy of destructive extraction industries, including logging and mining.

This documentary, presented by Patagonia Films, unpacks the complexities of modern conservation and challenges us to consider the importance of our last wild places.

GOOGLE TREKKER SA PROJECT

A team of passionate South Africans in partnership with Google Maps have trekked the length and breadth of South Africa to map 170 new trails, six UNESCO World Heritage Sites and all 19 National Parks, in a large 360-imagery collect of the country’s wildest regions.

They also produced short films for all the South African National Parks, that have helped share the importance for preservation and conservation of South Africa's unique and diverse biomes.

MAASAI OLYMPICS

The Maasai Olympics is more than just a sports competition; it's the intersection of maintaining cultural traditions and the conservation of a species.

The event, created by Big Life Foundation in collaboration with the local community, has changed the narrative of lion hunting as a right of passage to manhood within the Maasai warrior culture, encouraging the next generation to view the act as taboo and instead compete through sports. The Maasai Olympics is the hunt for medals, not lions.

The Olympics are held biennially in Kimana Sanctuary, at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which since 2012 has provided a culturally appropriate alternative for the warriors to compete for recognition, show bravery and leadership and, of course, to impress female admirers through sports, and instead promote the conservation of lions.

Filmmaker Q+A

Join the team from Black Bean Productions as they share more insight into the making of "Living on the Edge" and "Maasai Olympics" as well as the behind-the-scenes look at a new project they're working called "Rise of the Matriarch", plus the team from the Google Trekker SA Project will also be on hand to answer questions about their film and the project as a whole.
