ABOUT

Opening night at #CTAFF2019 features a selection of three climbing-inspired films. From the deep water soloing cliffs of Mallorca, Southern Spain to the towering 1700m west face of Chambe Peak in Malawi and to a group of black climbers inspiring change in their local climbing community in the USA, each film offering a unique view into the lives of a handful of very different climbers from around the world.

Also included in the show will be a Q+A session with "Mulanje" filmmaker and expedition member Garth Kingwill, as he shares more on the conception of the project, the experiences the expedition had whilst undertaking this mammoth task and the challenges of making the film, which will be enjoying its AFRICAN PREMIERE.

Enjoy beer on tap provided by Jack Black Brewing Company and stand a chance to win some awesome gear from Sealand and Hydro Flask by just being there!

Three amateur climbers and a filmmaker leave the safety of their everyday lives and travel to a remote corner of Malawi to attempt the biggest climb of their lives, the 1700m west face of Chambe Peak.

Tensions run high as the team are pushed to their limits battling the scorching African sun, forest fires, and scarcely believable rumours about vampires living in the area.

Slaydies /sladez/ noun – Ladies who slay, otherwise known as female climbers who crush while bringing as much joy to climbing as they do progress for women in the sport.

Join La Sportiva climbing athletes Margo Hayes, Paige Claassen and Emily Harrington as they take a trip to Spain, to explore the abundant sport climbing and deep water soloing that Mallorca offers. Each woman is a "slady" in her own rite; each has contributed to the progression of the sport, while continuing to support her fellow slaydies.

How can you be what you can’t see? Mikhail Martin, co-founder of Brothers of Climbing said, “I literally typed, ‘Are there black climbers?’ in Google … someone said, ‘black people don’t climb.'”

A small group of climbers began to challenge that thought. The Brothers of Climbing is a crew that's making the climbing community more welcoming. Watch to see how they created a community where one wasn’t.

Q+A with the filmmakers

SAFTA award winning Garth Kingwill, filmmaker and expedition member will be talking about the making of Mulanje and will be sharing more insight into the origins of the project.
