ABOUT

YOUR CHURCH SAID *WHAT* ABOUT GAY PEOPLE?

#NotAllChurches spread bigotry. In fact, many are under-utilised and under-resourced resources for social good. Case in point: the church hosting this event (which isn’t the source of the material we’ll be discussing [imagine appropriate disclaimer here]).

But if only talk with and about churches as though all were helpful, we’d never get around to confronting that the force behind the resurgence of anti-LGBTI legislation in many countries (and opposition to LGBTI rights where they are advancing) is people’s moral beliefs, which are rooted in metaphysical or religious assumptions about the universe and God. Churches reinforce or challenge these depending, often, on how it impacts their finances.

Consequently, the public withholds buy-in from the struggle for human rights. Progressive laws don’t stick. Courts are led by societies, not the other way around. The fact is people who don’t follow court cases, parliamentary debates or your social media echo chamber DO go to the temple, the synagogue, the church, the mosque and other places of worship and spiritual counsel.

“Your Church Said WHAT About Gay People?” unpacks the theology behind the book, “You Have To Be Gay To Know God”, addressing questions like, “Why has the church been forced to backtrack on so many other social justice issues in the past?” The Bible itself will force churches to backtrack on what they’ve been saying about sexual and gender diversity, amongst other things. Don’t believe me? Come. Bring a Bible, bring your skeptical relative (the churched one who’s “not being homophobic, but”) and bring the angry friend of yours who thinks all religious thought is problematic. (Won’t this mix make for a L.I.T. Q&A Session? We’ll strap the seats to the floor, :-D). Some of the talk material will be posted in essay form ahead of time. Watch this space.
