ABOUT

Great Preliminary Guide of Going for Refuge

When problems arise we usually seek a remedy in our external world because we are more familiar with external sources and we wish our experience of suffering to stop. Unfortunately remedies we seek although they may provide a temporary respite, fail to give real freedom from problems and suffering. Instead they often increase them. So we need to find help or refuge from within our own mind.

For 2500 years countless people have realized that the only true refuge is Dharma. Dharma is not an external object. It is the deep understanding and wisdom achieved by meditating and practicing Buddha’s teachings. These realizations are our only actual protection and refuge from suffering. When we achieve any of these, they directly protect us from fear, problems, and suffering.

The distinguishing characteristic of all who regard themselves as Buddhist is their conviction that the Three Precious Jewels, Buddha, the source of the teachings, Dharma the teachings and realizations, and Sangha, the community of practitioners, is their ultimate source of refuge.

This precious weekend will include Mahayana Refuge Vows Ceremony on Saturday morning. Gen Kelsang Mila will offer the Refuge Vows to anyone wishing to take Refuge in the Three Jewels, or anyone interested in finding out about Buddhist Refuge.
