Evictions.... How not to do it!

In today's day and age we frequently hear complaints of tenants seemingly having more legal power than landlords. Whilst this is not necessarily true, the risk for investors stepping out of line and into a legal trap when dealing with non-paying, abusive or deceitful tenants is very real. When investors get emotional about the potential loss of income or damage to or inaccessibility of their property purchased with hard earned money the "option" to take matters into your own hands seem very tempting. Join us to hear our legal experts speak and learn about how to avoid these potential pitfalls.

Bruno Simão from Bruno Simão Attorneys

Bruno completed his LLB degree at UNISA, whilst simultaneously gaining exposure and experience in the legal field. After an invaluable term with BSB Attorneys in Brooklyn from 2007 to 2011, Bruno founded Bruno Simão Attorneys in Sandton in 2012, noticing a gap in the market for a ‘close relation’ legal services offering to property investors.

Although his expertise ranges across the board to all facets of the firm’s areas of practice, including litigation, commercial and property law, he has specialised in evictions since 2007, being one of the attorneys of choice for complex and intricate evictions flowing from Sheriff’s auction sales. He offers specialised training on profiling, strategy, and risk management relating to such evictions as well as tenant evictions, having both contributed to the training and acted in representation of a range of persons including entry-level investors to high-level corporates, as well as Sheriffs, attorneys and legal advisors. He regularly presents and contributes articles on the topic and has spearheaded Court cases that have developed and framed this area of law..

Cilna Steyn from SSLR

Cilna completed her LLB Degree at Unisa, after which she was admitted as an attorney in 2007. She co-founded Steyn & Steyn Attorneys, where she began to specialise in evictions.

She regularly presents training session, where she advises groups of rental agents and private landlords on matters relating to Landlord and Tenant Disputes and broader scope Property Law related matters. She also acts on the panel of experts for the Law Society of South Africa’s Legal Education and Development. She presents seminars on behalf of LSSA: LEAD, educating attorneys nationally on eviction procedures and rental claims. She is one of the drafting attorneys of the TPN (Tenant Profile Network) Residential Lease Pack. Cilna authored “The Landlord’s Guide – Property Rental and Eviction” in 2015 and regularly publishes articles in newspapers and peer review magazines. She also appears on television and radio, participating in discussions relating to Property Law and in particular evictions. Cilna is an author for LexisNexis on the topic of Lease and Eviction.
