ABOUT

STUDENTS, ALUMNI TO REMEMBER THE DEATH OF GENERAL SMUTS

Flowers will be laid at the statue of General Smuts outside the National Gallery in a short ceremony at 17h30 on Friday 12 September.

For the first time the ceremony will be followed by a lecture commemorating an aspect of the famous South African leader’s life.

The event is hosted by the students and alumni of Smuts Hall, the oldest men’s residence on the Groote Schuur Campus of the University of Cape Town.

The event is open to Smuts Hall alumni and the general public. Admission to the lecture and reception is by pre-paid reservation only.

Following the laying of flowers, guests will make their way to the Cape Town Club at 18 Queen Victoria Street where Professor Bill Nasson of Stellenbosch University will give a lecture entitled A Different Dominion - looking at an aspect of Smuts' life in The Union's role in World War I.

A light reception prepared by Head Chef Albert Venter and wine from Backsberg Wine Estate are included in the ticket price. A cash bar for other drinks will be available.

Proceedings will draw to a close at 19h30.
