In 2025, the Cape Town International Kite Festival proudly returns with a renewed spirit and a powerful new theme: #CourageToFly. Now in its 31st year, the festival has long been a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity, and this year’s event celebrates the bravery it takes to face life’s challenges - especially when it comes to mental health. For the first time since the pandemic, the festival will take place over two full days on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October, marking a joyful return to the festival’s much-loved extended format at a brand new venue - Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery!

Organised annually by Cape Mental Health, the Cape Town International Kite Festival has been a beacon for mental health awareness since 1994. The event invites people of all ages and backgrounds to lift their eyes to the sky and take part in a shared experience that is as beautiful as it is meaningful. Each soaring kite represents not only creativity and freedom, but also the courage it takes to speak up, seek help, and support others on their mental health journeys.

“Anyone can be affected with a mental health condition at any stage of their lives. The increase in mental health conditions affecting the lives of more than 16.5% of South Africans remains a public concern. It takes courage to live with a mental health condition and it takes even more courage to rise above the stigma and talk about the experience and the daily recovery journey. Despite the ebbs and flows, the good days and the challenging days, people with a mental health condition remain resilient and, like kites soaring against adverse winds, they inspire us to have the courage to fly.” - Professor Doctor Ingrid Daniels, Cape Mental Health Chief Executive Officer.

This year’s festival promises a breathtaking display of colour and craftsmanship, featuring extraordinary show-kites flown by South African favourites and exciting international guests. The festival will span over two days and feature various forms of entertainment, kite-making workshops, vendors and an amusement park for the little ones!

Beyond the festival, the Cape Town International Kite Festival continues to expand its reach with online and community-based events, including the inclusive EduKite competition for learners from both mainstream schools and schools for children with special needs, their Heideveld Community Fly, children’s activities, and a variety of kites for sale. Whether attending in person or participating online, there’s a way for everyone to get involved.

If you can’t join us at the festival , you can still make a difference by supporting our Back-a-Buddy campaign. All funds raised go directly to Cape Mental Health’s essential free mental health services across the Western Cape, helping individuals and families access the care and support they need.
