ABOUT

Explore the original farms of Cape Town with their fascinating stories of indigenous people, stormy voyages, the global slave trade, wars and the discovery of gold, before ending off at a delightful good-food market for a scrumptious meal.

On our adventures we will:
  • Explores how the story of our past, present and future is interwoven with growing food
  • Trace the steps of the first settlers in Cape Town who started farming here to provide passing ships with fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Discover how the natural landscape determined settlement of the Khoi San and learn about indigenous plants that made up their diet
  • Learn about the urban agriculture movement, sustainable farming methods and permaculture
  • Identify indigenous edible plants and weeds along the way
  • Learn about the mountain rivers that still flow under the city
  • Experience sites steeped in the history of the Anglo-Boer war and the Gold Rush
As part of our campaign to transform Cape Town into an edible city Food Route  encourages seedbombing. You have the option of adding seedbombs on to your ticket which include organic/ heirloom/ indigenous food seeds :)

We'll be starting at the bottom Government Avenue, hopping on a bus to transport us to the various farms and ending at the City Bowl Market for a delicious meal before getting back on the bus to take us back to Company's Gardens.
