Day 4:            Karoo Art Hotel, Route 62 - (Monday, 19 March)

Today we ride to Barrydale, a small town with big character, through the new Houw Hoek Pass which covers some beautiful mountainous terrain. This middle section was known as Coles Pass - so named after the very same Sir Lowry Cole. The name Houw Hoek translates into 'Hold Corner' and is derived from the need to hold back, or slow down the ox-wagons whilst negotiating the steep descent down the pass.
We stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop, a legend in its own time and a great place to meet other bikers and international tourists alike because it is a pub!
Further along we traverse Cogmanskloof Pass on the R62, with its towering rock formations and enclosing mountain range, this wonderfully scenic 6.5km drive along the famous Route 62 links lesser known towns Ashton and Montagu. (Due to its close proximity to the Kingna River, the pass is sometimes closed due to flooding). Look out for the iconic tunnel – which is the only solid, unsupported rock tunnel in South Africa – and the Old English Fort, which you can climb up to.
For those keen to buy souvenirs we visit Hardy’s Memories of Africa for African Art and Curios. Shipping of larger items and orders by surface mail to most countries are facilitated.  Barrydale Hand Weavers is an interesting place to visit and browse for hand-made woven articles. The prices are certainly attractive, and we can transport your purchases in the luggage vehicle. Enjoy the night in Barrydale, fabulous architectural style and gorgeous design, staying at The Karoo Art Hotel.

Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the wine lands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.Overnight: Karoo Art Hotel          ActivitiesRonnie's Sex ShopA group of friends, their pranks and casual suggestions are what led to the establishment of the famous pub in the Little Karoo known as Ronnie’s Sex Shop. Look out for The Buffelsjags River Gorge, with its stunning rock pools and waterfall.
Tradouw, derived from the Khoi word tradau, loosely translates to “the way of the women”. Oudtshoorn has much to offer from ostriches to caves and ranches. The Cango Ostrich Farm offers a first-rate tour.  Our next stop is the Cango Caves and Cango Wildlife Ranch - where you can bravely go where no man has gone before - into the perilous gaze of a Nile Crocodile from a steel cage lowered into their watery domain! These excursions are included in the price of your tour, although lunch and drinks are not.

Day 13:          Protea Hotel Imperial, KwaZulu Natal Midlands - (Wednesday, 28 March)

This morning we will be collected from our hotel in 4x4 vehicles for an exciting day at the Sani Pass and the highest pub in Africa. Our direction through the beautiful Khomazana river valley steepens as the road gains altitude and the views become expansive. There is one specific sharp left-hand bend, where there is parking for four or five cars with a lovely view site - and if the skies are clear, you will have the opportunity to take beautiful photographs from this vantage point. The Sani Pass is the third steepest pass in the world, which is why we are going to use 4X4s through beautiful mountain scenery into Lesotho where you can meet some of the Basotho people and experience their culture and way of living. The route, called the ‘Roof of Africa’ has a nerve wrecking final climb of over 800 metres in just 8 kilometres.
Bumping our way over a short, but very poor quality road to the Sani Mountain Lodge we can enjoy a rest at the highest pub in Africa. With a roaring fire and walls adorned with history and graffiti, you can while away a few lazy hours and get a meal as well. The Highest Pub in Africa lives up to its name at 2873 meters above sea level. The Pub is situated at the top of the Sani Pass, a steep 4x4 trail with 27 corners and a number of them are tight switchbacks. Only 4x4 vehicles are permitted to use the pass.
After returning to the hotel we collect our bikes for a more sedate ride to Howick. The little village of Howick - a great place to find antiques, arts and crafts, and part of the Midlands Meander - was named after Earl Grey, the British Colonial Secretary who started out in life as the Viscount Howick. It remains fundamentally a farming town with the Karkloof Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday morning. Time permitting, we will see the  many attractions on this Midlands Meander Route, such as Terbodore Coffee Roasters, Howick Falls' and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, the monument is in honour of his efforts and multi-faceted influences and the nature of a single human being that had an enormous effect on the identity of a nation.

Statistically and in every sense, it out distances, out climbs, and out performs all its competitors with consummate ease to have become the most iconic gravel pass in SA. Situated between KZN and Lesotho the pass was built circa 1950 and remains a challenging drive in 4x4 vehicles with all the drama, scenery, bad weather and treacherous conditions expected of a pass with a summit altitude of 2876m ASLOvernight: Protea Hotel Imperial         IncludedBreakfast, accommodation and 4x4 Sani Pass trip to the highest pub in Africa.ExcludedAny other meals, all drinks and any other activities and services not listed.
