A guide to technology for impact. In this session, we will be exploring how investors and entrepreneurs are using new types of technology to create social and environmental impact. We'll look at how mobile payments, satellite imagery, 3-D printing, solar technology, the blockchain and artificial intelligence are contributing to access to financial inclusion, education, renewable energy, healthcare, water and sanitation and more. We'll hear from entrepreneurs and investors on what you need to take into consideration when evaluating the use of technology for impact.


Speakers include:


Janice Johnson- Janice works as an Head of Investing on the Vumela ED Fund. With over 15 years’ financial industry and investment experience, she’s passionate about helping entrepreneurs realise their growth potential and deliver significant job creation.Janice began her career in structured finance at Standard Bank in the Corporate and Investment Banking divisions. After that she spent ten years with Prudential Capital in London, most recently as Director, Principal Finance investing in loan and debt capital market transactions predominately in the structured credit, infrastructure and property and leisure sectors. Upon her return to South Africa, Janice worked as a consultant for PwC on the African Bank debt restructuring.


 Lebo Mokgabudi- Lebo has worked with financial institutions, mobile network operators and NGOS to leverage mobile technology to enable access to financial services in different ecosystems. The projects completed in various markets were measured by adoption and usage of mobile money, which involved developing relevant customer and agent value propositions, partnerships with various stakeholders in the value chain and regulatory advisory in markets where e-money regulations had not been established. Her experience spans Asia and Africa regions, such as Nepal, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The mission of Eaglequest Africa is to leverage technology to develop viable financial inclusion solutions and mobile payment strategies for corporates and small businesses in Africa. We have developed solutions for Women Development Bank Trust, led by Mrs Zanele Mbeki (previous First Lady), Gemalto (Government Financial Inclusion) and Standard Bank Group. We have worked with fintech startups in Africa, helping them scale and engage effectively with investors. This was a program run by Village Capital, where Lebo facilitated Fintech Africa 2017 and 2018. 


Aunnie Patton Power- Aunnie is the founder of Intelligent Impact, a technology for social impact advisory firm, and a university lecturer on Innovative Finance, Impact Investing and Technology for Impact.  At the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School, she holds the title Associate Fellow as well as Entrepreneur in Residence at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. At the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Graduate School of Business she holds the title Adjunct Faculty as well as Senior Advisor to the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She is also a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics’ Marshall Institute. 

A reformed M&A investment banker, Aunnie began her impact investing career in 2010 with Unitus Capital in Bangalore and has since worked with start-ups, intermediaries, funds, family offices, foundations, corporates and governments across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Aunnie's work has been published throughout the world, including by the Oxford University Press, the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR), the World Economic Forum, Impact Investing Policy Collaboration and as a Massive Open Online Course on Coursera.
