ABOUT

Brian House is a North American artist supported as a visiting artists in the Watershed project, to install new work at the Tshimolgong Precint, in collaboration between Fak’ugesi Festival & Watershed. Watershed is an art/science programme supported by the Centre for Water Research and Development, WITS, Brown University and Providence RI.


This artist talk and technique exploration in which House will discuss recent artistic research that uses sound and digital media art to gain a “sense” of our more-than-human relationships. How can data, sound, and performance be means of thinking beyond the individual?


About Brian House


Brian House House explores the interdependent rhythms of the body, technology, and the environment. His background in both computer science and performance informs his research-based practice. Recent interests include artificial Intelligence, extractive industries, and urban rats. House’s work has been shown by MoMA (NYC), MOCA (LA), Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, ZKM, Beall Center, and Rhizome, among others, and has been featured in TIME, WIRED, Neural, Creative Applications, Hyperallergic, Creator’s Project, and on Univision Sports. His academic writing has been published by Autonomedia, Contemporary Music Review, and Journal of Sonic Studies.


House is currently a Mellon Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Center for Spatial Research. In past lives he was a member of the R&D Lab at the New York Times, directed technology at the design studio Local Projects, was a resident at Eyebeam and at the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab, and recorded sound for National Geographic’s Okavango Wilderness Project. He holds a PhD in computer music and multimedia from Brown University.
