Cantus is renowned as one on the leading female choirs of today, and is among the elite of both Norwegian and international vocal ensembles. The choir has also represented Norway and Europe in a number of international festivals and conferences. Cantus is ranked amongst the world’s best women’s choirs by INTERKULTUR.
With its unique sound quality, Cantus is a source of inspiration, both regionally, nationally and internationally, for the aspiration of ensembles with equal voices. The choir's achievements, creative productions and continuous development of new music has been ground-breaking for similar ensembles.
When Cantus was established in 1986, the choir hired Tove Ramlo-Ystad, who still holds the position as the choir's artistic director and conductor. A singer herself, Tove has always focused on pure and natural voices, while still maintaining a clear homogeneity. This clarity and pureness of the choral sound harmonizes especially well with modern contemporary choral music and traditional Norwegian folk music.
”Vuelie” has since become a huge hit, and has given the choir and the song’s composer Frode Fjellheim both recognition and acclaim and allowed the music to reach beyond the scape of the choral world. In the spring of 2017 the choir released its newest album “Northern Lights” through the legendary record label Decca Records, featuring Fjellheim’s serene music. The album reached the top of the UK classical charts within weeks of its release.
