ABOUT

The 7th annual Mathaithai Trail Run & MTB Race 2018 will take place on Saturday, 18 August at Lebone II College outside Rustenburg.

The fun and challenging Mathaithai Trail Run features the 20km Celebration Run, the 10km Mathaithai Trail Run, the 5km Fun Run and the 2km Kiddies Fun Walk
The Mathaithai Mountain Bike Race gives cyclists a choice of 3 distances; the 45km Challenge Ride, the 15km Let's Get Lost Ride, and the 5km Let's Go! Fun Ride. All races and rides take place on trails and tracks through the beautiful bushveld on the Lebone campus and adjacent to the school.

In 2018 the Mathaithai Trail Run & MTB Race will take place with the Lebone Festival, a celebration of the school's 20 year commemoration. A variety of market stalls, hospitality areas and food offerings will be on offer. Children's entertainment will include inflatables, mini-golf and games, and the main stage will host entertainment throughout the day, including the "Battle of the Bands" contest.

Mathaithai 2018 promises to be a vibrant festival event, offering something for both experienced and novice athletes, and a fun time out for the whole family!

VENUE



Standing proud at the foot of Tshufi Hill, Lebone II – College of the Royal Bafokeng overlooks the village of Phokeng, outside Rustenburg. One reaches the school either via the N4 off-ramp or directly from Phokeng, or via the R565 from Sun City. Surrounding the school is the unspoilt natural environment on which the Mathaithai events are held.

Mathaithai Facilities:
  • All trails are clearly marked with permanent and temporary signage. Over the month before the event a bush-clearing team clears the trails extensively.
  • Marshalls are present on the trails to guide runners and cyclists on the various routes.
  • Water points provide drinks and snacks, and are placed strategically on the route for greatest coverage. No bottles are provided, only cups are utilised, or runners/ cyclists must bring their own hydration.
  • Mathaithai 2018 is a zero-waste event. Water cups must be thrown in the bin within 50m of the water tables.
  • Two sets of bathrooms are found close to the start/finish. These bathrooms are kept clean and fully-serviced throughout the event.
  • There is parking for the runners as well as the spectators on the field. This area is cordoned off and is clearly marked. Security guards are stationed at all entrances to point visitors in the right direction.
  • The area is secure. The school has security on the property at all times. 
  • The Race Registration desk will be at the parking area at the Main gate. From registration visitors will enter the campus with a race or a festival armband.
  • Visitors and families are welcome to set up their own umbrellas and gazebos in a designated area.
  • The pallet bridge over the dam is a highlight of the cycle races and all finishers end by crossing the dam.
  • A secure and convenient bike park provides peace of mind for cyclists who wish to park their bikes before the MTB races or whilst they enjoy the festival.

TRAIL RUN EVENTS

20km 20 YEAR CHALLENGE
The 20km 20 Year Challenge route takes runners from bushveld through gum plantation to spectacular indigenous forest and on up to the very top of Tshufi Hill, which affords fantastic views. The trail is mostly a single track and is highly technical in parts due to gradient, boulders and loose gravel. For experienced runners only.
The 20 Year Challenge starts at 07h00.

10km TRAIL RUN
The 10km Trail Run takes runners via a well-worn path through indigenous bush veld that surrounds Lebone II College, through gum plantation to spectacular indigenous forest, heading for high ground above the school and then winding downward toward the main gate.
The Trail Run starts at 07h45.

5km FUN RUN
The 5km Fun Run is ideal to run or enjoy as a family walk.  The easy trail takes you through the indigenous bushveld that surrounds Lebone II College and is suited to junior runners and those out to enjoy the beauty of the area on a leisurely stroll.
The Fun Run starts at 08h30.

2km KIDDIES WALK
The 2km Kiddies Walk is ideal for our youngest participants who are too little to complete the 5km race. This easy trail takes you through the Lebone II campus and some indigenous bushveld, and is suited to families with small children.
The Kiddies Walk starts at 08h40.


MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENTS
5km JUNIOR RIDE
The 5 km Junior ride is safe and non-technical and is suitable for young riders and those who want to enjoy a family ride.
The Junior ride starts at 11h00.

45km MATHAITHAI CHALLENGE
The 45 kilometer marathon Mathaithai Challenge is regarded as a fast race with only 600 meters of total vertical ascent. The race starts and finishes at Lebone II College and the route covers dirt roads, jeep tracks and some exhilarating single track on both the northern and southern side outside the school premises.  For experienced cyclists only.
The  Mathaithai Challenge starts at 12h00.

The 15 km Let's Get Lost Ride is safe and not too technical and is suitable for experienced riders and fit novices that want to experience cycling in the bush.

LEBONE FESTIVAL



The vibrant Lebone Festival is a celebration of the school’s 20 year commemoration this year. The event will include various food offerings and product stalls, and children’s entertainment including games, mini-golf and inflatables. A stage will host entertainment and music through the day.
ENTRY FEE: R40
(Lebone Festival entry is included for all Mathaithai participants. All spectators are required to pay the entry fee for the festival.)

An ASA licence is compulsory for 10km and 20km runners only - temporary licences will be available for purchase at the event.
Please remember that hats, sunscreen and tekkies are essential. Water points are on the route - no bottles, cups only OR bring your own hydration.

NO HELMET = NO RIDE.  A suitable Mountain bike is essential.
 
CAMP SITES: 17 & 18 AUGUST
Non-electrified camp sites are available on the sports field for the nights of 17 & 18 August
The camp sites cost R50 each, regardless of whether you book for one night or two nights.
Only tents are permitted - no more than 4 people per site.
Toilets and showers are available at the school. 
Strictly no alcohol or smoking is permitted on the school property.
 
INFORMATION | TERMS & CONDITIONS
 
  • NO TICKET, NO ENTRY! Each person is required to have a race entry or festival entry ticket; this includes children 3 years of age and older (children 0-2 years enter for free).
  • Tickets will be checked at the entrance gates and each person in the car must have a ticket. Tickets will be scanned at the Main Gate. 
  • Bags may be searched on entrance to maintain security.
  • STRICTLY NO ALCOHOL OR SMOKING IS PERMITTED.
  • Food and soft drinks will be on sale - no external food or drink may be brought into the venue.
