ABOUT

Jazz on Bree presents THE YOUTH IN JAZZ series - featuring: THE JAZZ YARD ACADEMY

THE JAZZ YARD ACADEMY story:

A non-profit organisation operating in Bonteheuwel since April 2014, with the prime objective of creating a healthy society through the media of music. Under the guidance of experienced musicians, these youngsters (7-18 yr old) find a new meaning to life. It is encouraging to see the way music brings a smile to their faces, … how excited they are about every new lesson! At first glance, our mission appears to be purely to give young people an opportunity to become proficient musicians, but our mission goes well beyond that.

We are passionate about creating a better society, where the humane qualities & principles proliferate. Through love (our motto “Spread the Love”), and encouragement and total support of individual expression, we strive to promulgate values such as: respect & tolerance for one another, self-belief & positivity, a nature of honesty, strive for success & excellence, independent thinking, creativity & innovation, and the knowledge that love can conquer the evils in our society.

The children have wowed their audiences wherever they performed this past year, very often mixing it onstage with some of our most highly respected local musicians, such as:

Ramon Alexander, Chadleigh Gowar, Shaun Johannes Buddy Wells, Tony Cedras and Andrew Ford. They have appeared on-stage at Community Chest Carnival, The Artscape, AFDA Theatre, Nassau Theatre, Baxter Theatre (standing ovation every night), and on 29 Dec 2017, they delivered a performance at Oude Libertas Amphitheatre that had the crowd applauding them at every solo improvisation instance. They have also been honored by both Blake Hellaby and Heinrich Isaacs, being invited to open for the launch of their respective new albums. Their performance at the Cape Town Jazzathon (V&A Waterfront Amphitheater) in 2017 and again in 2018, had the crowd baying for more. Four JYA children were selected as part of the CTIJF "All Star" band, which performed at the CTIJF concert in Greenmarket Square on Tuesday, 20 Mar 2018

. Four children have also been selected to perform as live band at the World's Children's Prize ceremony in Sweden in April 2018. At this prestigious event the Jazz Yard Academy received a special award as ambassadors for equal rights of the child, which was presented by Queen Sylvia of Sweden at Gripsholm Slott (castle) in Mariefred.

At the Muizenberg Jazz Festival, in Oct 2017, they had the honor to be selected as performers, with the likes of internationally acclaimed musicians, Bokani Dyer, Muriel Marco, Bongani Sotshononda, Buddy Wells, Ramon Alexander and McCoy Mrubata. The academy students do not pay for lessons and so we have many needs to keep this worthy initiative going. Funding for the instrument purchases, teachers' stipends, travelling costs, instrument repair costs, specialized workshops, outings, etc. comes from income earned from live performances, donations, and the shortfall comes from us, the passionate committee members.
