ABOUT
Half Hot Club is a gypsy jazz duo comprised of vocalist and ukelele bassist Katharina, and guitarist and backing vocalist Frances van der Walt. The two sisters are Half the band members of Hot Club d’Afrique, a family gypsy jazz band from Johannesburg, with whom they have been performing for nearly a decade.
Modern-day Gypsy Jazz is based on the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, who formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France in Paris in the 1930’s. In recent years, the style has seen a resurgence in popularity across the globe. Many gypsy jazz bands reference the original Hot Club in their names, such as the Hot Club of San Francisco and the Hot Club of Beijing. This global community of musicians and fans alike gathers each year to celebrate the music of Django at the various gypsy jazz festivals around the world.
Katharina and Frances were raised in a musical family, and despite having studied Economics and Law, respectively (and in Katharina’s case having worked for two years as a Development Economist) the pair ultimately decided in early 2018 to pursue music full-time.
Their performance at The Studio will feature old and new Gypsy Jazz standards, as well as some of the duo’s own compositions.
Zéna & Dolly Arbaji
With a Franco-Syrian musical background, Dolly (guitar/voice) & Zéna (piano/voice) have been playing together since forever, both at home and in various concerts around Paris. The sisters have been traveling independently for a few years, each joining different musical projects and will now be reunited under your amazed eyes (and ears). Zéna & Dolly will entertain with a mix of English, French, Syrian and Brazilian songs.
