ABOUT
Sonidos del Verano is an exhibition of Spanish classical and flamenco harmony and rhythm.
This project has its origins in my, Conrad Pienaar’s love for the music of Spain, the harmony and rhythm of which has enthralled me for a very long time.
Our programme consists of a combination of flamenco and classical items.
A bit more about the performers:
I met Atang Metlhape in 2024 when we were performing with Spanish artist Rey Chams at a music and dance festival in Mozambique. Atang is an incredibly intuitive and musical flamenco dancer. I was astonished at her commitment to her craft so I asked if she would work with me on a set of flamenco items for guitar and dance. Atang is bright, articulate and unnervingly wise.
Ailyn Nienaber is a fellow music teacher and superb soprano. I have long wanted to work on guitar and voice duets by Rodrigo, Granados and Sor so promptly implored the fast talking, articulate, studious and passionate soprano to work on this repertoire with me. Upon interacting with her, one might feel like she is a female Sherlock Holmes that stepped from fiction into reality to see if you can keep up with her in conversation. Try talking to her.
Maryke Swanepoel, also a colleague in music education is an astute and methodical musician with frightening sight-reading ability and an affinity for Spanish music. Maryke will be on piano, joining Ailyn in duets by de Falla and Obradors. Mayryke, like Ailyn possesses an unusual amount of items in the colour of pastel or mustard yellow.
The rhythmic character of flamenco music is most noticeable in the items pairing flamenco dancer, Atang, and me on guitar while the harmonic and melodic beauty of Spanish music is most apparent in the items that pair soprano Ailyn, and painist Maryke. Ailyn and I will also perform some items together from Spanish composers such as Sor, Granados and Rodrigo.
