FLOURISH: The Professional Series
Trauma, Recovery & Whole-Person Care (HPCSA CPD eligible)
Join Dr Portia Mazabane, Clinical Psychologist, Speaker and Mental Health Advocate, and Dr Anita Phillips, LCSW-C, Licensed Trauma Therapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Garden Within, for a multidisciplinary professional training focused on trauma, recovery and whole-person care. Designed for medical, mental health and allied health professionals, this training will explore how trauma can affect emotional, physical, relational, social, cultural and spiritual well-being, and how integrated, trauma-informed care can support recovery and human flourishing.
Dr Phillips’ keynote, Trauma Across Generations: Emotional, Physical and Relational Impact and Paths to Recovery, will examine trauma within historical and intergenerational contexts, including cumulative adversity, nervous-system and emotional processes, patterns of adaptation, whole-person impact and evidence-informed foundations for recovery.
The afternoon brings together perspectives from clinical psychology, psychiatry, medical physiology, social work, occupational therapy and trauma therapy to consider one central question: How does each discipline help us to view the whole person through a trauma-informed lens?
Topics throughout the day will include:
- Trauma across generations and the lifespan
- Emotional and physiological responses to trauma
- Mental and physical health comorbidities
- Family, caregiver and community experiences
- Social and cultural contexts of trauma
- Personality and individual patterns of adaptation
- Purpose, participation and everyday functioning
- Faith, diversity and professional boundaries
- Interdisciplinary care and appropriate referral pathways
- Recovery, resilience and human flourishing
The programme also includes a curated Conversation with Dr Anita Phillips, audience Q&A, multidisciplinary professional perspectives and an expert panel using a real-world clinical scenario to explore how whole-person care can be applied in practice.
