Out of Mined (in association with Protect the West Coast) - Documentary Screening

This award-winning documentary shines a light on the extractive armageddon unfolding along the West Coast of South Africa – a pristine wilderness home to the largest concentration of endemic succulent species in the world, and the planet's only arid biodiversity hotspot.

Including the Western and Northern Cape, the 450km coastline along the Succulent Karoo faces relentless pressure from industrial diamond and heavy mineral mining on dunes, beaches, and marine ecosystems, leaving behind a scarred moonscape.

Deep South-based non-profit Protect the West Coast (PTWC) collaborated with Scarborough filmmaker Arthur Neumeier from Eyeforce to amplify the lived experiences of fishers, scientists, legal experts, and Indigenous communities on a beautifully crafted cinematic journey that takes you across exquisite ocean and terrestrial vistas to explore the ancestral connections between indigenous people and the unforgiving environment that sustains them.

While the film documents dire threats from the cumulative impact of mining, it is an urgent call to action – a rallying cry that speaks of resilience and hope, and a move to a Nature-based future that benefits all who live there.

Sit back and connect with this extraordinary landscape, then join PTWC in a short panel discussion to discuss the future we want for this amazing coast.
