Transforming support for neurodivergence begins with recognition that meaningful help requires acceptance, assistance, environmental change—or often all three. Functioning and participation are shaped not only by diagnosis or abilities, but also by environments, relationships, expectations, and systems. When these are inaccessible or carry negative judgments, differences can become barriers to inclusion and equity.
This workshop examines these dynamics through two complementary frameworks: the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. The ICF, developed by developed by the World Health Organisation, offers a universal lens on functioning, disability, and environmental factors. While Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory highlights the dynamic, reciprocal interactions between individuals and their contexts. The workshop will explore these together, to move beyond diagnosis alone, guiding the identification of individual and environmental goals, barriers and facilitators, and supports that foster inclusion, accessibility, and equal rights while acknowledging genuine challenges and the need for appropriate assistance.
