From Surviving to Thriving: What I Wish I Had Known When Starting Out

Every founder has a moment where they wonder whether the business will survive. Fewer talk openly about what it took to get from there to thriving.

In this fireside conversation, Gia Whitehead and Harry Scherzer share their respective journeys, the key lessons they have learned and the major turning points that shaped their businesses.

Whether you are launching, growing or leading an established business, you will leave with practical insights, fresh perspective and a few new connections.

About the Speakers:

Gia Whitehead is the CEO and Co-Founder of TSIBA, an impact-driven higher education institution she helped establish over 22 years ago with a vision that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Since then, she has helped shape TSIBA's strategy, financial sustainability, curriculum and global partnerships, with a particular focus on creating pathways to leadership and economic opportunity for talented young South Africans. She returned to the CEO role in 2023 and was recognised with the 2023 ABSA Women in Leadership Award. Gia serves as an Independent Governor on the United Herzlia Schools Board and holds a Bachelor's degree in IT and a postgraduate qualification in Enterprise Management from UCT.

Harry Scherzer is the CEO and Co-Founder of Future Forex. A qualified actuary with a strong background in finance and risk management, he is a leading voice in South Africa's finance and investment space. His accolades include winning the Banking & Finance category at the 2025 Forty Under 40 Global Awards and being named one of Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans in 2024.
