PREAMBLE
One of the reasons for the high costs of Intra-African Trade is the integration of Africa with the rest of the world faster than with itself, the rest of the world have strategies in doing business with Africa, but Africa seems to lack effective strategies in doing business with the rest of the world. Africa is integrated with the rest of the world but not with itself. This statement is true for most African countries and cities, the rest of the world are doing businesses with African cities, but African entrepreneurs need to start exploring opportunities across the continent, beyond the shores of their individual countries; and this underscores the need to encourage African entrepreneurs to start embracing the advantages and opportunities embedded in Intra-African Trade and Investment, with a view to deepening regional integration and social cohesion on the continent, while maximising their profits at the same time.
With unemployment levels on the rise in Africa, many young Africans face a bleak future. The more ambitious among them look to starting their own businesses as a way of keeping their heads above water. For others it’s a matter of being their own boss, while some find a passion or dream that they feel drawn to pursue. Studies have shown that Entrepreneurship could reduce Africa’s unemployment level, but more importantly it could also help improve intra-African trade and investment. Unlocking African MarketsTM (UAM) Conference 2018 will be held under the overarching theme: Deepening African Integration through Entrepreneurship and Intra-African Trade Enhancement The conference will attract high-level speakers and high-profile personalities across the continent and in diaspora.
The month of May is a very auspicious period for the conference, being the Africa month, we hope to leverage the significance of the Africa month to amplify the need to pay more attention to Intra-African Trade and Investments. The media will play a pivotal role in the marketing and promotion of UAM 2018. Based on the feedbacks from the success stories of the past two UAM conferences, there is overwhelming evidence that facilitating greater intra-African trade will not only enhance trade performance – but could have strong impacts on poverty reduction.
