ABOUT
Join us for an intimate Sunday afternoon of community engagement, live music, koeksisters and conversation at the Transatlantic Cultural House in the heart of Salt River. Featuring Babalwa Mentjies and Bheki Khoza, this special afternoon brings together two distinctive musical voices in a relaxed setting close to the artists and rooted in community. Enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music, improvisation, stories and the warmth of a Cape Town Sunday — accompanied by traditional koeksisters, snacks and soft drinks.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Babalwa Mentjies is a Cape Town jazz vocalist, songwriter and music educator with a deep commitment to developing young musicians and community-based music education. Through the Transatlantic Cultural Collective NPO (TCC), Babalwa is the lead music facilitator for the Dryden Primary School Music Programme, introducing learners to music through listening, experimentation, creativity and making music together. Her work with TCC reflects the organisation's commitment to bringing music education and cultural participation into local communities.
Bheki Khoza is a renowned South African jazz guitarist, composer and educator whose career spans South Africa and the United States. A SAMA-winning musician, he brings decades of performance, teaching and improvisational experience to TCC's Master Musician Heritage Mentorship Programme, where he is one of the programme's master artists mentoring emerging musicians and sharing his knowledge of South African jazz traditions. Through this work, Bheki helps connect generations of musicians and keep our musical heritage alive.
ABOUT THE TRANSATLANTIC CULTURAL HOUSE
The Transatlantic Cultural House is a creative and cultural space in the heart of Salt River, bringing together music, heritage, artists, community and cultural exchange. The House grew from the work of the TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange (TAJE) and the Transatlantic Cultural Collective, creating a local home for artistic exchange, music education, mentorship, heritage preservation and community engagement. Our intimate programmes are designed to bring audiences close to the artists, creating space for conversation, connection and the sharing of South Africa's rich musical heritage.
ABOUT TAJE
TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange (TAJE) is a cultural exchange initiative connecting artists, musicians, educators and communities across South Africa and the United States through jazz, creative collaboration, education and heritage preservation. TAJE supports live performance, artist residencies, mentorship, music education and cultural dialogue, with a particular focus on celebrating living musical traditions and creating opportunities for the next generation. Through the Transatlantic Cultural House, this work continues locally in Salt River — creating a space where community, creativity and heritage come together.
