Muller's Oom Schalk was wry, softly spoken, and empathetic, with a pause here and a puff at his pipe there. Seated most of the time on his bench, with just a few sips of peach brandy, dressed simply in his khakis, braces, veldskoens and felt hat, pipe in mouth, he told delightful tales which Bosman made so much his own, clearly describing unique personalities of the area of Groot Marico and environs. Oom Schalk's brand of wisdom was funny, astute and at times heart wrenching....
