MERCY

An original play by Dr Micia de Wet

Some stories are inherited. Others are rewritten.

On South Africa’s rugged Wild Coast, where legend and reality are said to meet, an ancient story is carried on the ocean winds.

A young princess stands on the threshold of a future already chosen for her. A mysterious ferryman emerges from a hidden world beneath the waves. And a village on the brink of change must confront destiny, courage and the stories that have shaped its people for generations.

When Nadia prepares for a sacred rite of passage, tradition expects her to choose a husband and secure the future of her people. But Nadia imagines another path: one in which she might lead, protect and transform them herself.

Then, one restless evening beside the sea, she encounters someone humans were never meant to see.

As an unlikely bond forms, whispers of betrayal begin to spread and storms gather on land and sea.

Blending African legend, myth, humour and powerful storytelling, Mercy is an original theatrical journey inspired by the mysterious Hole in the Wall on South Africa’s Wild Coast.

At its heart is a story about courage, compassion and the possibility of challenging the future others have written for us.
