Joburg at 140 - our founding mothers

To celebrate Joburg’s 140th anniversary, we decided to do something different and put together a special bus tour focussing on our city’s founding mothers (for a change).

Join JHF founder, the inimitable Flo Bird, and current JHF chair, David Fleminger for an entertaining journey across the city as we visit sites associated with some of the powerful women who left their mark on Joburg.

We begin in Soweto with a visit to the home of Sophie Masite, our first black woman mayor, who continued living in her humble abode despite her status as first citizen. We’ll then pass Lillian Ngoyi’s house and head up to Crown Mines Primary School, founded by Joyce Seroke’s mother, and on to City Hall where Jessie McPherson presided as Joburg’s first woman mayor.

We’ll also visit Mary Fitzgerald Square, check out the Parktown beacon marking the northernmost point of the original Randjeslaagte triangle, and pay tribute to the Sisters of the Holy Family who staffed Joburg’s first hospital.

The bus will depart from Sunnyside Park Hotel. Please arrive at 08.30 so we can depart at 09.00 sharp. Due to the distances covered, this tour will be approximately 4 hours. You are welcome to bring along snacks and drinks for the bus (non-alcoholic, please).
