Melville at 130 - a walk through history

Carved out of the original Braamfontein farm, Melville has changed considerably since it was laid out 130 years ago. Once a sleepy working class suburb, today the suburb is a bohemian hub filled with students, restaurants and quirky shops.

To celebrate Melville’s 130th birthday, join Antoinette Morgan on a journey through this fascinating neighbourhood, from the bustle of 7th Street to its quieter, tree-lined avenues. Discover historic architecture, interesting homes, churches and some of the stories behind the suburb’s early years.

Please note, this is a walking tour that covers a distance of approximate 1,5 kilometres. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along water and sun protection. We will meet at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 9th Street. Car guards will be on site.
