Johannesburg’s beginnings: Ferreirasdorp - Celebrating 140 years of the City of Gold

Johannesburg started in Ferreirasdorp, at the time a series of diggings interrupted by the occasional ox wagon. Starting as a tent town, it rapidly became a tin town, before the momentous upgrade to brickwork.

To celebrate Johannesburg’s 140th birthday, walk with Karen Curry to the Randjeslaagte Beacon, which marks the western point of the original triangle which became Johannesburg in 1886. Carry on down Diagonal Street as we follow in the footsteps of the many Johanneses after whom the city gets its name (no stopping to buy a love potion, you can return later!).

In keeping with love and anniversaries, we start our tour at the Magistrates Court, a place where many Johannesburg marriages began. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, use sun protection and bring along drinking water. This is an inner-city tour so please be aware of your surroundings.
