Liebeslieder: Brahms & the Romantic Lied

The program centers around Johannes Brahms’s celebrated Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 52. Composed in 1869, this masterwork captures the charm, romance, and rhythmic elegance of 19th-century Vienna. Written for vocal quartet and four-hand piano accompaniment, the waltzes draw their poetic texts from Georg Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora, blending folk-like simplicity with intricate musical craftsmanship.
In addition to the Liebeslieder-Walzer, the evening features a curated selection of Romantic Lieder for solo voice and piano. These individual art songs explore the core themes of the era, from yearning and heartbreak to deep communion with nature, showcasing the distinctive expressive range of each voice type.
