On Saturday, 24 October, Zawadi Yamungu takes the stage at Untitled Basement for an intimate and immersive presentation of where her artistic journey has taken her and where it is going next.

This is not simply a return to the stage. It is the revealing of a new chapter.

Following the release of her acclaimed album NGIMUHLE, Zawadi Yamungu has continued to move, explore and expand. The album introduced audiences to a deeply personal and distinctive musical language, rooted in voice, indigenous instrumentation and a contemporary African sensibility. Its reception marked an important moment in her artistic journey, but rather than settling into the sound she had established, Zawadi chose to keep moving.

Since NGIMUHLE, she has explored new sonic landscapes, encountered different environments and opened herself to new creative relationships. Through travel, collaboration and experimentation, her practice has continued to evolve, allowing fresh influences, textures and ideas to find their way into her music.

Now, she is ready to share the result of that evolution.

Known for her commanding live presence and distinctive approach to indigenous instruments, Zawadi Yamungu creates performances that extend beyond music. Her work invites audiences into an atmosphere of sound, feeling and cultural expression, where voice, rhythm and instrumentation become tools for exploring identity, heritage and the world around her.

At the centre of her practice is an ongoing search: a desire to understand herself, her surroundings and her heritage through sound.

After NGIMUHLE

NGIMUHLE represented an important expression of Zawadi’s artistic identity. The project allowed her to articulate a particular moment in her journey, one shaped by self-recognition, beauty, identity and the power of owning one’s voice. Its title, NGIMUHLE, carries the affirmation “I am beautiful,” and the work has since extended into conversations around Black identity and African emancipation.

But artists do not remain in one place.

The Zawadi who arrives at Untitled Basement on 24 October is informed by NGIMUHLE, but she is not confined by it. This performance offers audiences an opportunity to encounter an artist in motion: one whose work continues to grow through experience, curiosity and a willingness to embrace the unknown.

There is a sense of rebirth at the heart of this new chapter.

Not a departure from who she has been, but an expansion of who she can be.
