St George's Unplugged - First Thursdays

St Georges Unplugged - Free Classical Lunch Concerts in the heart of the City. 1.15pm to 2pm

In the lead up to the new series of concerts for 2027, there will be 3 concerts taking place at St George's Cathedral on the First Thursday of October, November and December.

Thursday 1st October: CPYO Quintet

The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Ochestra holds auditions each year to create exceptional chamber music ensembles who perform throughout the year to develop their performance skills as well as encourage new compositions to be written. For this concert the CPYO String Quartet is joined by clarinet and accordion for a mixed programme of music.

Thursday 5 November: Best of Both Piano Duo

Pianists Yohan Chun and Francois Botha bring their love of both classical and jazz music to the piano for a concert progamme of the Best of Both

Thursday 3 December: Ezakwantu African Quartet

The Ezakwantu African Quartet is a Cape Town-based group of four postgraduate musicians from the University of Cape Town (UCT) College of Music who specialize in indigenous and traditional African instruments.

The concerts offer a variety of classical music in an informal and friendly way. They are introduced by the musicians, and patrons are invited to sit, unwind, ‘unplug’ and contemplate through music in the iconic surroundings of St Georges Cathedral in the heart of the City.

Concerts are free of charge as the Cathedral remains an open space for all, but donations are welcome to help fundraise for the Artists Fund for the 2027 Series of lunchtime concerts running from 12 January to 29 April. These concerts also then help raise funds for the Cathedral's much needed building repairs and maintenance along with concert running costs. The St George’s Unplugged was established with two primary objectives:

• To connect individuals to the historic and spiritual surroundings of St George’s Cathedral, offering an in-depth experience through music, with immediate support being raised through donations collected at the door to assist with maintenance and repairs.

• To connect people living in and visiting Cape Town to the diverse and high-quality classical music industry present throughout the year.
