Received a strange message from a friend or family member asking about a puzzling WhatsApp message you supposedly sent them asking for money? Or a request from them to pay them back the money they lent you, which you know nothing about.

Chances are your WhatsApp account has been hacked. But hacking is only one of the risks lurking in your WhatsApp — strangers messaging you out of nowhere, people pretending to be someone they're not, and groups or channels that aren't as harmless as they seem, are all part of the picture too.

In this no-jargon session, NetSavvy founder Carina van Wyk will walk you through:

• Why strangers message you and the tricks people use to pretend to be someone else
• Practical steps for securing your account and protecting yourself, your contacts, and your children
