A RARE OPPORTUNITY
Cumberland Nature Reserve is not generally open to day visitors.
This special weekend gives you a rare opportunity to explore this beautiful private reserve with a guided hike, or stay overnight and experience everything Cumberland has to offer.
ABOUT CUMBERLAND NATURE RESERVE
Cumberland is a 560-hectare private nature reserve just east of Pietermaritzburg, offering an incredible mix of savanna, woodland, wetlands, deep valleys, cliffs, waterfalls and beautiful wooded gorges.
It's a fantastic destination for nature lovers, hikers and landscape photographers.
The reserve is rich in wildlife and biodiversity, including:
- 300+ bird species
- 50+ butterfly species
- 200+ wildflower species
- 30 mammal species
- Abundant indigenous trees and grasses
- A healthy snake population, including African Rock Pythons

THE HIKES
FRIDAY — LOLAMBAZO
A challenging hike taking us down to the bottom of the spectacular big waterfall.
Approximately 7 km | ±4 hours
This is a challenging route with lots of steep and technical sections.
Not suitable for beginners.
SATURDAY — THE KRANZ
Hike to the highest point in the reserve, with incredible views stretching across the surrounding landscape.
6–7 km | ±3 hours
SATURDAY NIGHT — NIGHT HIKE
SCORPION HUNT!
A fun after-dark adventure looking for scorpions and other nocturnal creatures.
Overnight guests only.
SUNDAY — HORSESHOE BEND
An easy and fun hike to the beautiful Horseshoe Bend, with plenty of opportunities to look for wildlife along the way.
Approximately 7 km | ±3 hours

- Day visitors are welcome as part of this special event — R299 pp per day hike
- Cumberland Nature Reserve is not generally open to day visitors, making this a unique opportunity to explore the reserve
- Non-electrified campsite — no electricity
- Bathrooms with showers and hot water
- Running toilets available
- Running water available, but not suitable for drinking — bring your own drinking water
- Self-catering units are available for non-campers — contact us for details
- Event runs rain or shine, except in extreme weather conditions
- No refunds or credits for no-shows
