Untitled Basement presents a rare live concert honouring one of the foundational voices of South African jazz, as Kyle Shepherd's Xahuri Trio brings the music of Abdullah Ibrahim into a contemporary musical conversation.

Featuring Kyle Shepherd on piano, Benjamin Jephta on double bass and Marlon Witbooi on drums, the trio has been assembled specifically for this project. Each musician has had meaningful contact with Abdullah Ibrahim and comes from a generation of Cape Town musicians profoundly shaped by his music.

For Shepherd, this is a deeply personal journey. His relationship with Ibrahim's music stretches back more than three decades, beginning through his mother, Michele Shepherd, who performed and toured with Dr. Ibrahim in 1994 before becoming a teacher and director at his M7 Music School in Cape Town. Ibrahim's music is what first inspired Shepherd to play the piano, and remains one of the deepest influences on his artistic voice.

The trio performs a curated selection of Ibrahim's compositions through contemporary jazz improvisation and interpretation. Rather than a retrospective or a recreation of familiar recordings, the concert treats these compositions as living works — open to new interpretation, discovery and artistic possibility.

At its heart, the project speaks to the lineage at the centre of jazz: musicians learning from those who came before them, while finding their own language within that tradition. A meeting between generations of South African jazz musicians — rooted in the beauty, humanity and spiritual depth of Ibrahim's music, but alive in the hands of a new generation.

Expect an evening of exceptional musicianship, improvisation and South African jazz heritage, reimagined for the present.
