CINEMA WITHOUT BORDERS

Imperiya Film Festival South Africa International is an international independent film festival hosted annually in Cape Town, South Africa. Formerly known as the Russian Film Festival South Africa International, the festival began in 2025 with a vision of bringing international cinema to South African audiences while creating a platform for filmmakers to share their work, connect with audiences and build international relationships. From its beginning, Imperiya has been about more than simply screening films. It is a meeting place for filmmakers, actors, producers, industry professionals and film lovers from different countries and cultures. Through cinema, the festival creates an opportunity for stories that may not always reach international audiences to be seen on the big screen in Cape Town.

The festival welcomes films from around the world and celebrates different forms of independent filmmaking, including Micro Films, Short Films, Feature Films, Experimental & Art Films, Animation and Documentaries. Each film brings its own perspective, culture and story, giving audiences the opportunity to discover voices from different parts of the world.

OUR JOURNEY

The festival's first season took place in Cape Town in 2025, beginning a journey that has continued to grow each year. Season 2 in 2026 marked an important expansion, with official film screenings moving to Ster-Kinekor V&A Waterfront, followed by the Documentary Showcase and Red Carpet Awards Ceremony at Hotel Sky, Cape Town. Now, Season 3 brings the festival back to Cape Town from 10 to 17 April 2027, continuing to build an international platform for independent cinema.

SEASON 3

Festival Week will begin with two days of official film screenings at Ster-Kinekor V&A Waterfront on 10 and 11 April 2027. Audiences will experience a selection of independent films from filmmakers around the world, representing different cultures, styles and approaches to filmmaking.

On 17 April 2027, the festival moves to Hotel Sky, Cape Town, for the Documentary Showcase during the day. The evening will conclude with the Red Carpet Awards Ceremony, bringing filmmakers, guests and audiences together to celebrate the achievements of Season 3.

The Awards Ceremony will include the presentation of festival awards, a live performance and the screening of the Best Feature Film.
