Sunset Picnic With The Lions

Spend an evening in the Cape Winelands with good food, beautiful views and the lions of Drakenstein Lion Park.

Bring along your own picnic basket and enjoy the evening with friends and family, or choose a picnic basket for two when booking. Once you arrive, make your way to the picnic area and settle in opposite Drakenstein’s beautiful family of rare white lions.

As the sun begins to set and the late afternoon cools, the lions wake up, become more active and talkative. You may hear their deep roars and calls carrying across the park as evening plays out.

During the evening, you’ll also have the chance to join an optional guided tour of the sanctuary and meet the 19 lions who call Drakenstein home. Get to know some of the park’s much-loved residents, including sweet Stuart, lively Sharon and Ozzy, giants Tarzan and Pythagoras, and beautiful Nala and her family.

There’s plenty of time to relax with your picnic, explore the park, enjoy the sunset and take in the mountains and Winelands around you. As the light fades, listen out for the lions as their roars echo across the park, creating a pretty special soundtrack to an evening outdoors.

Bring your camera along to capture the evening light, the lions and the beautiful surroundings. Whether you're hoping to capture a great photograph or simply enjoy the moment, the evening offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and experience the Park as the lions come alive.

And there’s a little something extra:

Every General Admission and Picnic for Two Admission ticket is considered an “adult ticket” and automatically enters the ticket holder into the draw to win a one-night stay for two at Ingonyama Tented Camp, “Sleep with Lions.” The prize includes accommodation in the tented camp surrounded by the lions, along with traditional South African cuisine and warm Boland hospitality.

Tickets are limited and will not be available at the door.

Why we are raising funds:

Due to newly enforced policy requirements by provincial authorities, Drakenstein Lion Park may be forced to rebuild its entire sanctuary despite its perfect track record and decades of experience. This herculean task could be financially crippling to South Africa's oldest genuine sanctuary for rescued big cats.

About Drakenstein Lion Park:

Drakenstein, established in 1998, is the longest-operating South African-owned big cat sanctuary, built, owned and run by the Hart family with their decades of hands-on experience in the rescue and provision of world-class care to previously abused and mistreated captive big cats.

Drakenstein Lion Park is acclaimed for creating an ethical, non-intrusive and non-exploitative environment in which rescued big cats can be viewed by visitors without negative impact. Each rescue is treated as a sentient individual with care tailored to their unique psychological and physiological well-being.

Rules

• All minors must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.
• Smoking is strictly prohibited within the park.
• Teasing or deliberately disturbing the animals, including whistling, clapping, shouting, or similar behavior, is strictly prohibited.
• Throwing any objects at, or into, animal enclosures is strictly prohibited.
• No pets or other animals are allowed onto the property.
• Please do not run within the sanctuary.
• Rights of admission are reserved

Booking & Refund Policies:

• Children aged 2 years and younger receive free entry and do not require a ticket.
• Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be available for purchase at the door.
• As this event is a fundraiser, regretfully, no refunds will be issued if you are unable to attend.

Overnight Stay Competition Policies:

Accommodation for the prize must be arranged directly between the winner and Drakenstein Lion Park. The event organisers are not responsible for arranging or managing the accommodation booking.
