ABOUT

Data & AI Community Day Durban: Plugged In + GitHub Copilot Dev Days 2026

Two events. One stage. Fully current.

Data enthusiasts, AI innovators, and tech explorers: we spent 2026 unplugged, stripping things back to prove the talks could stand on their own. They could. So now we're plugging back in: same hands, same honesty, a lot more power.

Join us on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Richfield College, Umhlanga Campus, for Data & AI Community Day Durban: Plugged In, co-located with GitHub Copilot Dev Days 2026, a FREE, full-day, in-person event for the community, by the community.

So, What's "Plugged In"?

AI Unplugged was our answer to a world drowning in buzzwords. AI Unplugged II — The Maskandi Sessions turned up the local volume: storytelling, craftsmanship, skill, and Durban pride. Both of them sold out.

Plugged In is what comes next. Unplugged was about proving there was something real beneath the hype. Plugged In is about running current through it, connecting the tools, the pipelines, the agents, and the people who actually ship this stuff. Same no-hype spirit, more voltage.

Nothing here is a product roadmap in disguise. If a session promises something, someone on stage is going to show it working, and tell you where it broke.

GitHub Copilot Dev Days 2026 Comes to KZN

Here's the part we're genuinely excited about: GitHub Copilot Dev Days 2026 is coming to KwaZulu-Natal for the first time, and it's running right here, inside Plugged In.

Dev Days is a dedicated block of demo-filled presentations: real sessions with real context, where the speaker talks you through the thinking and then shows you the tool doing the work on screen. Not slideware. Not a highlight reel.

Expect to see Copilot in actual working conditions: agent mode on a real repository, custom instructions that shape how it behaves on your codebase, AI-assisted code review, dragging legacy code into the present, and wiring Copilot into a pipeline rather than leaving it in the editor. And, because this is us: honest coverage of where it falls over, what it gets confidently wrong, and when you're better off doing it yourself.

If you've been using Copilot as a fancy autocomplete, this block will change how you work on Monday.

Following Up on AI Unplugged II — The Maskandi Sessions

July's Maskandi Sessions event was another sold-out house: a line-up that spanned agents, governance, Power BI, Postgres, temporal data, African language technology, and AI music built live on stage. Add that to four sold-out events in 2025, Durban's first .NET Conf, nearly 1,000 attendees, and 65 speakers, and the pattern is clear: this community shows up.

Which is exactly why the seats go fast. More on that below.

What to Expect

A full day of 50-minute deep dives and 20-minute lightning talks, delivered by experts, architects, engineers, and Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs), running across two parts of the day. We open with a keynote, and from there the day splits.

The Mains — the community track

Our core track, running the full length of the day. Agents, LLMs, RAG, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Microsoft Fabric, streaming and real-time analytics, Power BI, and database development (because SQL is not dead, and we'll fight anyone who says otherwise), alongside the work that keeps all of it standing up: testing AI systems, CI/CD, and responsible AI. Plus the human side of the industry: careers, breaking into tech, and building something of your own from right here in KZN.

Live Takes — GitHub Copilot Dev Days 2026

A focused block of demo-filled presentations on GitHub Copilot in real work: agent mode, custom instructions, code review, legacy refactoring, and pipeline integration, with the failures left in.

Topics You'll Love:

  • AI Agents & Agentic AI: multi-agent systems, orchestration, and real-world implementations
  • Generative AI: LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, and what's actually production-ready
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP): servers, clients, integrations, and use cases
  • AI-Assisted Coding: GitHub Copilot, agentic coding tools, and how AI is changing the way we build software
  • Testing & Evaluating AI: how you know the thing works before your users find out it doesn't
  • Responsible AI: bias, fairness, ethics, and governance — the stuff that actually matters
  • AI for Africa: unique use cases, challenges, and opportunities on our continent
  • Microsoft Fabric & Analytics: data engineering, OneLake, lakehouses, and business intelligence
  • Database Development: performance tuning, architecture, and modern database tech
  • Streaming Data & Real-Time Analytics: Kafka, Event Hubs, Spark, Flink, and data in motion
  • Power Platform & Power BI: making AI and data accessible to business users
  • DevOps, Cybersecurity, Career & Community: because great engineers think beyond the code

And yes, by popular demand (and a touch of infamy), the legendary panel discussion returns. This is where you get to ask our speakers the hard questions live on stage. Bring your spiciest ones and watch the sparks fly.

Why Attend?

  • Actionable content: no fluffy slides, just proven patterns, code, and architectures
  • Live demos: Copilot and AI tooling shown working on real code, not on a screenshot
  • Local + global voices: Microsoft MVPs, architects, thought leaders, and community experts
  • Real community: Durban's friendliest tech crowd, a buzzing hallway track, and plenty of time to network
  • Free event: world-class content, zero cost

Whether you're a seasoned developer, a data wrangler, a business analyst, a student, or just starting out and curious about what all the fuss is about, this event is for YOU.
