**New Orleans is meets Joburg .**
As an extension of **Standard Bank Joy of Jazz**, we’re bringing the festival’s spirit beyond the main stage and into the city — creating another opportunity for the festival to stay connected and in touch with the wider jazz and live music community.
And we're doing it with **Tank and the Bangas**.
In a few weeks, the New Orleans collective will be gracing the **Conga Stage at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz** and closing off their SA visit, we’re bringing them into the intimate surroundings of **Untitled Basement** for a very different kind of encounter.
Tank and the Bangas have never been interested in fitting neatly into one musical category. Their sound moves freely between **funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, jazz and spoken word**, creating live performances that are energetic, unpredictable and completely their own.
The story feels especially fitting for the Basement. The group began in 2011 at an open mic night in New Orleans, where Tarriona “Tank” Ball and the musicians around her found a space to experiment, collaborate and build something together.
Years later, they would win the **NPR Tiny Desk Contest**, earn Grammy recognition and become one of the most distinctive live acts to emerge from New Orleans.
But their magic has always made sense in any room and to be able to also experience them up-close is special.
Close enough to feel the music.
Close enough to catch the unexpected.
Close enough to know that tonight's version will never happen quite the same way again.
This is **Jazzing Around: Live at the Basement** — a continuation of the Joy of Jazz conversation, an intimate Johannesburg encounter, and one very good reason to keep your September calendar open.
