ABOUT
MONIQUE BINGHAM — BACK HOME ??
Some voices become synonymous with a sound, a feeling and an era. Monique Bingham is one of them.
This September, Untitled Basement is honoured to welcome one of the most distinctive and beloved voices in global house and jazz culture to our stage for
With a career spanning more than two decades, Monique Bingham has carved out a unique place in music history — moving effortlessly between jazz, soulful house and deeply expressive songwriting. Her unmistakable voice and poetic approach have made her a favourite among some of the world’s most respected producers and DJs, including Kerri Chandler, Karizma, Ralf GUM, Jellybean Benitez and Matthias Heilbronn.
Her journey began in the mid-1990s as the lead vocalist of the influential acid-jazz ensemble Abstract Truth, whose work drew from the legacies of jazz greats while pushing the sound into new territory. Their music quickly found an international audience, including support from the legendary Gilles Peterson and the Talkin’ Loud movement.
From there, Monique’s voice travelled far beyond the jazz and house underground. Her collaborations and recordings have become enduring favourites, including the celebrated “Take Me to My Love” with Ralf GUM, while her work with the late Hugh Masekela further connected her artistry to the rich musical landscape of South Africa.
Her relationship with South Africa runs deep. In 2011, Monique made her South African debut at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, sharing a bill with artists including Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 2013, she became the first non-South African artist to perform live at the Metro FM Awards — another landmark moment in a career filled with them.
Now, after years of music, movement and memories, Monique Bingham returns to South Africa — her second home.
As winter gives way to warmer days and we welcome the arrival of spring, join us for an intimate evening celebrating an artist whose voice has travelled across generations, continents and genres.
