Curious about burlesque?

Come and spend a deliciously playful morning exploring the art of tease, movement, confidence and creativity with Lady Magnolia, founder of Cape Town’s The Rouge Revue.

No dance experience is needed. No particular body type, level of fitness or ability to “be sexy” is required either. Burlesque is about so much more than that.

This workshop is an opportunity to play, laugh, move your body, learn something new and discover a little of your own stage persona, all in a relaxed and supportive environment.

What is burlesque?

Burlesque is a theatrical performance art built around tease, character, humour, sensuality, storytelling and self-expression.

Unlike many traditional forms of dance, there is no single way a burlesque performer is supposed to look or move.

It can be glamorous, funny, cheeky, elegant, outrageous, powerful or completely ridiculous.

At its heart, burlesque is about owning the stage, playing with the audience and enjoying the delicious art of revealing just enough.

What to expect

Your morning will include:

A one-hour introductory burlesque class

Learn some of the foundations of burlesque, including posture, posing, parading, bumps, grinds, shimmies and, most importantly, the art of the tease.

We’ll explore how small movements can become theatrical, how to play with confidence and character, and how to make an entrance before you’ve even taken your coat off.

The class is suitable for complete beginners.

A one-hour pastie crafting workshop

Then it’s time to get creative.

You’ll make your own pair of burlesque pasties to take home with you, with plenty of sparkle, glamour and personality encouraged.

Pastie making materials will be provided.

Photographs and playtime

Bring along some bubbly, as once the dancing and crafting are done, we'll admire our handiwork and leave some time for photographs, snacks and drinks to share.

Bring your friends, dress up if the mood takes you and make a morning of it.

Who is Lady Magnolia?

Lady Magnolia is the founder and Headmistress of The Rouge Revue, Cape Town’s home of burlesque.

Performing and teaching as Lady Magnolia, she has spent many years introducing people to burlesque through classes, workshops and live shows, with a particular focus on confidence, self-expression, body appreciation and the sheer joy of dressing up and putting on a show.

Her workshops are welcoming, playful and designed to make burlesque accessible to people who may never have considered themselves dancers or performers before.

You do not need to arrive feeling confident.

That’s part of what we’ll be playing with.

What should I bring?

Wear something you feel comfortable moving in.

Leggings, a skirt, shorts, a fitted top or whatever makes you feel good will work perfectly. If you have something sexy you've been dying to wear, bring that along!

Heels are completely optional but will help you to feel sexy and glam.

You may also want to bring a robe, boa, gloves or something fabulously theatrical to play with, but you don’t need to buy anything especially for the workshop.

Most importantly, bring your curiosity and your sense of humour.

Bring along some bubbly to share!
