Cape Town Camerata Easter Concert at the Cape Town City Hall

The Cape Town Camerata brings Arvo Pärt’s monumental Passio to life at the iconic Cape Town City Hall as a part of their easter concert.

Arvo Pärt is one of the most distinctive and influential voices in contemporary music. Born in Estonia in 1935, he developed tintinnabuli—a musical language of extraordinary simplicity, inspired by the resonance of bells, Gregorian chant and early sacred music.

His monumental Passio, a setting of Christ’s Passion according to St John, is perhaps the purest expression of this style. Pärt strips the Passion narrative of theatrical excess: voices and instruments unfold with ritual-like restraint, punctuated by profound silences. The result is music that feels at once ancient and startlingly modern—stark, luminous and intensely moving. Rather than telling us what to feel, Passio creates a space in which the listener can encounter the drama, suffering and mystery of the Passion for themselves.
