Hazeldene Hall & The View - Parktown then and now

Join the JHF for a special tour to Hazeldene Hall and The View, two of the oldest surviving houses on Ridge Road, Parktown. Although these impressive mansions are no longer private homes, both have found new purpose through renewal and sensitive adaptation.

The View was built for Sir Thomas Cullinan, founder of the Premier Diamond Mine. When it was first built, its elevated position gave it the view from which it took its name — northwards across the landscape towards the Magaliesberg.

Hazeldene Hall was built for Charles Jerome, the ‘Coal King of the Transvaal’, whose coal-mining interests made him an important figure in the early industrial history of the Rand.

Designed by architects Burrow and Treeby, the two houses speak in contrasting architectural styles, yet both retain the distinctive atmosphere of late-Victorian Parktown as it transitioned into the Edwardian era.

Seasoned JHF guides Kathy Munro and Nicci Noble will share the stories of the people who built these houses, the architects who designed them, and the changing styles and aspirations of early Parktown. We will also share the story of the Transvaal Scottish Memorial in Ridge Road and how and why it was transported across the city.

The visit concludes with tea and scones at The View (included in the ticket price).
