ABOUT
Marguerite Oelofse - OUR HEART.
Walkabout and talk, followed by a live music performance.
At only 17 years old, Marguerite Oelofse received a heart transplant in Cape Town.
Dr Susan Vosloo, Africa’s first female heart surgeon, gave Marguerite was given a second life.
Our Heart is an intensely personal body of work about survival, gratitude, loss and becoming, told through Marguerite’s lens as both photographer and subject.
The story behind the work is extraordinary.
Her donor died after an accident involving an ostrich. From that tragedy, life was transferred.
This series reflects what it means to live after being given life.
It speaks to the fragile threshold between loss and continuation, and to the unseen bond between two women who never met,
yet share one beating heart.
Photographed at the site of the accident, the work draws on the symbolism
of the Cosmic Egg, the Sacred Heart, sacrifice and the weighing of souls.
Join Marguerite for a walkabout and talk on Sunday, 13 September 2026, 12:00 midday, as part of the Cape Town Photography Festival 2026.
Followed by a live performance by an all-female Jazz Trio
