ABOUT

The CSNY Experience:

  • Nick Catto: bass, vocals
  • Matt Catto: drums, vocals
  • Jono Tait: guitar, vocals

In 1964, Matt and Nick Catto's grandfather Keith Blundell opened The Troubadour, Johannesburg's first dedicated folk music club. At the same time Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young began writing the songs of an anti-war, anti-establishment, anti-discrimination generation on the other side of the world.

Two generations later, Keith's grandsons Nick and Matt Catto, together with Jono Tait, are singing those same songs: Teach Your Children, Our House, Ohio, Helplessly Hoping, Southern Cross. The need for them, it turns out, never really went away.

Keith's circle included Des Lindberg and Jeremy Taylor, who was later banned by the apartheid government for his protest songs. South Africa had its own folk revolution playing out in those same years, on a smaller stage, for many of the same reasons.

Jono comes from the same lineage. His father, Richard Tait, started out in the folk clubs at UCT and Rhodes in the seventies, chaired the Barleycorn Folk Club committee through the 80s, spent the 90s in bands playing rooms like the Baxter and the National Arts Festival, then opened and ran The Alma Cafe for 21 years, still one of South Africa's best-loved intimate listening venues.

Jono, Matt and Nick, recipients of multiple ovation awards from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown for their original music, are now bringing CSNY's songs to the Garden Route.

***** Sarah: "Really excellent harmonies and fully embodied Crosby Nash Stills and Young. One of the best tribute bands I have seen."

***** Andyjay: "Awesome harmonies, out of this world, and the musos were first class. Great show, brought tears to my eyes."

***** Sue: "The music was so good - I sang my way through all the songs! Especially 'Four Dead In Ohio' transported me right back to my youth. Amazing evening!"

***** Engela: "We absolutely loved the show. It took us right back to when we saw CSN and Y live many years ago. Great harmonies with each member bringing a special touch and talent to the show. One of the best tribute shows I have seen. Highly recommended."

Three voices. Acoustic instruments. No theatrics. Just the harmony these musicians have been building for three generations.
