ABOUT

Our next installment at Rolling Wood Surf & Skate Store takes place on Friday the 5th of January and features the fantastic Hatchetman and Jon Shaban

Hatchetman: This foursome combine their prodigious musical and vocal talents to form Hatchetman, a band that, as the name suggests, cuts straight to the heart with songs on life, love, and most things in between. Their soaring harmonies and searing dynamism in the musical accompaniment has brought many a person to tears. The honesty, and a willingness to explore the darker and more tender sides of the human condition, as well as a very personal and human presentation of the same, sets the band apart from many of its contemporaries.   Lyrical topics range from heartbreak to a rumination of the multifaceted nature of Cape Town, while musically, the band meets somewhere between folk, rock, funk and acoustically inclined sounds, all delicately underpinned by the poignant, powerful and beautiful blend of three voices.

Jon Shaban: Having gigged extensively as part of various bands, 2012 saw Jon Shaban launch his solo career. Armed with just his voice and his guitar, he takes to the stage to deliver songs which have been described as honest and easy to relate to. The performance is raw and there's no holding back on the sharing of extremely personal experiences. The kind we've all been through but haven't necessarily processed in the way Jon does.

Since 2012, Jon has achieved a lot in South Africa having performed at most of the country’s top festivals as either himself or with his band, The Shabs. He has graced the stage at Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, White Mountain Folk Festival and Mieliepop, where they were reviewed as one of the top bands of the festival.

Jon has also toured with and opened for various international artists such as Frank Turner, Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers) and Brett Newski.

In 2015, Jon launched his first solo album aptly entitled ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ in conjunction with quitting his job and committing to music full time. After rigorously touring around South Africa, 2016 saw Jon embark on his first stint of international touring around the UK and Europe as both a solo artist, as well as part of his band, The Shabs, which was also in conjunction with the launch of the their 1st full length album titled, 'Folk is dead'

Jon is currently in studio working on his 2nd full length solo album which will be released in the 1st half of 2018.

Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm!
